Johnson Backs Trump’s Push for Historic GOP Midterm Convention

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed Wednesday that former President Donald Trump’s proposal for a Republican midterm convention is moving forward, calling it a “genius idea.”

“The president called me when I was on the road, maybe a week ago,” Johnson recalled during a press briefing. “He said, ‘Mike, how about a midterm convention?’ I told him it was brilliant.”

Trump reportedly pitched the idea as a way to rally Republicans just before the 2026 elections — something that has never been done outside of a presidential cycle. Johnson said Trump believes it would give the GOP “a great rallying point” and build momentum heading into the fall.

According to Johnson, Trump is also consulting Senate Majority Leader John Thune and new RNC Chairman Joe Gruters to map out the details. “I think everybody’s on board,” Johnson said. “I can’t wait. We have so much to celebrate.”

Democrats, meanwhile, are weighing whether to hold their own midterm convention to sharpen their message before 2026 — an idea Johnson dismissed as “hilarious.”

Trump first floated the plan in a Truth Social post, boasting about the GOP’s fundraising edge, expanded base, and what he called record-breaking momentum. “It has never been done before,” he wrote. “STAY TUNED!!!”

The proposal comes as Republicans prepare to defend their congressional majority. While history shows the party in power often loses ground in midterms, GOP leaders point to redistricting efforts in states like Texas as a possible advantage.

At the same time, Democrats are facing worrying trends. According to a New York Times analysis of voter registration data from L2, Republicans have gained 2.4 million new registrants since 2020, while Democrats have lost more than 2 million — a net swing of 4.5 million voters. The shift reflects Trump’s growing appeal among men, younger voters, and Latinos, reshaping long-standing partisan assumptions.

“The results are incredible, a record pace,” Trump wrote, insisting the GOP is “healing and prospering” the country.
