Some insects can be helpful housemates — like spiders that control pests. But others, like Phereoeca uterella, also known as kamitetep, plaster bagworms, or household casebearers, can quietly invade your home and cause damage.
These tiny moths thrive in warm, humid environments and feed on a variety of household materials, making them a potential nuisance, especially during summer months.
Interestingly, kamitetep are more noticeable in their larval stage than as adults. The larvae carry gray, flat, cocoon-like cases that act as camouflage and protection. These cases also serve as pupal shelters, blending seamlessly into walls, ceilings, and even garden beds — making early detection tricky.
