The parents were arrested after authorities discovered the children, ranging from 18 months to 18 years old, inside a rural Vinton County home on June 30. Investigators allege that more than half of the children had been confined to a single 12-foot-by-12-foot room for the past four years. The home was reportedly covered in dirt and feces.

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described the conditions as deplorable and said the children’s lives were in danger when they were found. He compared their appearance to that of feral animals and said the situation resembled something from the third world.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain offered a similarly harsh assessment, noting that most livestock in the area was kept in better condition than the children were.

Medical Response and Injuries

Several children required immediate medical care after being removed from the home. Two were airlifted to specialized trauma centers after suffering serious physical harm, while seven others were transported to hospitals in Columbus. One child was admitted to the intensive care unit and required intubation.

Investigators noted that several of the children had difficulty communicating. The oldest child, an 18-year-old woman, is developmentally disabled and cannot write her own name.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Elizabeth Siders, 33, and Gary Siders Jr., 36, along with grandparents Gary Siders Sr., 73, and Christina Siders, 67, have each been charged with 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment. All four have pleaded not guilty and remain jailed on $300,000 bond.

Wilson called the situation pure evil and said the home was one of the worst environments he had seen in his career. However, the mother’s attorney, Thomas Stolly, pushed back against that characterization.

Stolly told the Associated Press that evil requires malice, and he does not see malice in Elizabeth. He suggested the case is more about isolation than evil, noting that someone who became a mother at such a young age may not have known a different way of life.

The attorney pointed to the timeline of Elizabeth’s life, explaining that she has been shaped by her circumstances for nearly two decades. He asked the public to give the legal process time to play out and noted there is a real human component to the case.

Meanwhile, extended family members say they were horrified to learn about the conditions. The son-in-law of the couple told local media that relatives would have intervened if they had known what was happening. He also said the family has received death threats since the arrests became public, forcing them to keep their own children inside out of fear.
