When I asked my daughter, Ellie, who she wanted to invite to her birthday party, she casually named a woman I’d never heard of—and my world tilted.
“Mommy, can I invite the pretty lady who visits Daddy while you’re at work?” Ellie asked.
I froze. “The pretty lady?”
“Yes! She’s really nice. She says Daddy’s so kind and always gives him a big hug when she leaves. Can she come?”
I forced a calm, “Sure, honey. Invite her next time she’s here.”
That night, my mind raced. Who was this woman? A friend? A neighbor? Or… someone else entirely?
The day of the party arrived. An hour in, the doorbell rang. Standing there was a young woman with long dark hair, holding a small gift bag.
Ellie ran to her. “It’s her! Daddy’s friend!”
I led Jake and the woman, Lila, into the kitchen—and that’s when the truth hit me: Lila was Jake’s daughter from a previous relationship, a daughter he had never known about until recently. Her mother had passed away, and Lila had tracked him down to meet her dad.
