Kohl’s Announces Plans to Close 27 Stores Across the U.S.

Kohl’s has announced plans to close 27 underperforming stores across more than a dozen states as part of efforts to boost profitability. The closures, expected to be completed by April, represent a small portion of the retailer’s 1,150 locations. In a press release, Kohl’s emphasized confidence in the overall health of its profitable store base.
This decision comes as outgoing CEO Tom Kingsbury prepares to step down on Wednesday. Kingsbury will be succeeded by Ashley Buchanan, the current CEO of Michaels, with Kingsbury staying on as an advisor and board member until his retirement in May to ensure a smooth transition.
About Kohl’s
Founded in 1962 and headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Kohl’s is one of the largest department store chains in the U.S., operating over 1,100 locations nationwide. Kohl’s offers a wide range of products, including clothing, footwear, accessories, beauty items, and home goods.
The retailer is known for value-driven shopping, offering frequent sales, discounts, and its Kohl’s Cash rewards program. Kohl’s carries national brands such as Nike, Levi’s, and Sephora, alongside private-label products like Sonoma Goods for Life and Croft & Barrow. Its partnership with Sephora has brought mini beauty shops into select stores, broadening its appeal.
Kohl’s also emphasizes convenience with omnichannel services, including online shopping, in-store pickup, and Amazon returns. The company has focused on sustainability, diversity, and community initiatives, even as it navigates challenges from evolving consumer behavior and competition from e-commerce giants.
Despite recent struggles, including a nearly 40% drop in stock over six months and a larger-than-expected decline in holiday season sales, Kohl’s continues to adapt by revamping store layouts, expanding product offerings, and improving digital engagement.
