María and Teresa Tapia were inseparable in the literal sense of the word but doctors managed to separate them

Despite their actual inseparability, Teresa Tapia and María were separated by surgeons. Now look at them.

These women are incredible, with personalities and behaviors as varied as day and night.

Teresa Tapia was literally inseparable with María. They shared a liver, pancreas, and a portion of the intestines and were united at birth at the chest and abdomen.

There was little prospect of survival. These cases are incredibly uncommon worldwide, occurring in about one out of every 50,000 to 100,000 births. However, a group of medical experts made the decision to do a very difficult procedure.

Six experts put back together what should have been each girl’s organs after spending many hours dissecting each one. The doctors acknowledged that they were taken aback by how beautifully everything went, but the procedure succeeded without a hitch.

For the first time, they feel independent and grin today. When you see them today, you will be in awe.

The surgical team at Richmond Children’s Hospital (USA) has the courage to do this challenging procedure. To reconstruct what each girl should have had, six physicians spent hours removing organs one by one.

Because Teresa received about 90% of the liver’s blood supply and María was extremely underweight, there was a considerable chance of problems. The procedure went smoothly, albeit the doctors acknowledged that they were somewhat aback by how well everything went.

It was also unusual for a whole institution to be involved: therapists modified commonplace objects to meet the requirements of the girls, fashion students made clothing, and sculptors made plaster models of the bodies for the surgeons’ rehearsals.

The idea was to combine creativity and science to provide the kids a future.

Now that they feel autonomous at last, Teresa and María are happy. Lisandra Sanatis, their mother, adds, “I always imagined them being self-sufficient.”

Each will now have a unique life filled with pleasures, whims, and even arguments.

The Tapia sisters’ tale is more than just a medical marvel. It serves as a reminder that everything is achievable with faith and teamwork.
