Tragedy Strikes at Edisto Beach

A horrifying fire has destroyed the $1.5 million oceanfront home of Judge Diane Goodstein in Edisto Beach, South Carolina. The blaze broke out on October 4, turning the beautiful property into an inferno that left the community in shock.

Fire crews from St. Paul’s Fire District rushed to the scene and “worked flawlessly together to ensure the safety of the occupants.” Family members escaped the flames by jumping from an elevated first floor, and rescuers even used kayaks to ferry them across the water to waiting paramedics.

Three people—including Judge Goodstein’s husband, former state senator Arnold “Arnie” Goodstein—were hospitalized with serious injuries. Some reportedly suffered broken bones after leaping from windows. Judge Goodstein herself was on the beach when the fire started. Authorities say the blaze may have been preceded by an “apparent explosion,” though the exact cause is still under investigation.
