So if the science consistently points to no direct link, why does the belief remain so strong?
Why the Myth Persists
One explanation may lie in sleep. Anthropologists and psychologists suggest that brighter moonlight may have disrupted sleep for early humans, leading to fatigue, irritability, and mood changes. Modern research does suggest that lunar cycles can subtly affect sleep patterns, which may indirectly influence behavior.
Another powerful factor is confirmation bias. People tend to remember strange or negative events that occur during a full moon and ignore those that happen at other times. When something unusual happens under a bright moon, it stands out—and reinforces the belief.
Mental health expert Amy Morin, LCSW, explains that expectations themselves can shape behavior. If people believe things get strange during a full moon, they may unconsciously act differently, turning the belief into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The Moon’s Spiritual and Cultural Role
Beyond science, the moon holds deep spiritual significance across cultures. Many Indigenous communities view the moon as a guardian of water and a marker of time, naming each full moon to track seasons and honor nature. Rituals and ceremonies tied to lunar phases remain meaningful practices today.
In astrology, the moon is associated with emotions, intuition, and the subconscious. A person’s “moon sign” is believed to reveal emotional tendencies, while lunar phases are often used for intention-setting, reflection, and self-care. Full moons are commonly associated with release and awareness, while new moons symbolize beginnings.
Even though science has dismissed many lunar myths, the moon continues to influence how people think, feel, and behave—consciously or not.
You may not be able to blame the full moon for bad driving or awkward encounters, but paying attention to its presence can encourage reflection and mindfulness. And when October’s full moon arrives, there’s nothing wrong with embracing the mystery and atmosphere that make the season feel a little more magical.
