Sherrone Moore Scandal: Michigan Coach Fired, Detained by Police, and Under Assault Investigation – Here’s Everything We Know

Michigan football has been thrown into turmoil after a dramatic and fast-moving sequence of events involving former head coach Sherrone Moore. Within a single day, Moore was fired, detained by police, and connected to an ongoing assault investigation, leaving the university community and fans stunned.

Moore Fired After Internal Investigation

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the University of Michigan announced it had terminated Moore with cause, stating that an internal investigation uncovered credible evidence he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The school emphasized that the conduct violated university policy and that it maintains a zero-tolerance stance toward such behavior.

Moore, only two seasons into his head-coaching career, had led Michigan to a 17–8 record, including a 9–3 finish in 2025. The Wolverines are still set to face the Texas Longhorns in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31, but the team will now be led by interim coach Biff Poggi.

Police Detain Moore Hours After His Firing

The scandal escalated further Wednesday evening when reports revealed Moore had been detained by Saline Police earlier in the day. He was then transferred to Pittsfield Township and booked into Washtenaw County Jail. Court records confirm he is connected to an alleged assault investigation.

Police have not released many details but stated officers responded to a call on the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road for an alleged assault and took a suspect into custody. Although Moore’s name wasn’t listed directly in the initial statement, public jail logs confirmed his booking. Investigators also noted the incident “did not appear random.”

No Charges Filed Yet

Despite his detention, Moore is not expected to be arraigned today. Washtenaw County court officials said they have received no documents related to a case involving Moore.

Their statement reads:
“At this time, no paperwork has been filed with the court regarding this matter. If documents are received, they will be promptly entered into our system.”

The timeline for any court appearance remains unknown.

Rumors Were Circulating on Campus

Some University of Michigan students said that whispers of a potential scandal began circulating weeks ago—particularly after the team’s 31–13 loss to USC on Oct. 11. Many dismissed the rumors as frustration from fans, but Wednesday’s news confirmed what some feared.

U-M freshman Aiden Wolfson said he initially assumed the firing was due to performance:
“I thought we were too late firing him over football. Then I read what actually happened, and it all made sense.”

Recruits React Quietly, Some Supporting Poggi

Most of Michigan’s recent signees have stayed quiet during the chaos. However, a few players—such as three-star athlete Markel Dabney and offensive lineman Adrian Hamilton—shared supportive posts toward interim head coach Biff Poggi, signaling stability amid uncertainty.

Poggi Steps In — Again

This is not Poggi’s first time taking over. He previously led Michigan in wins over Nebraska and Central Michigan earlier this season while Moore was serving a suspension related to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing investigation.

Poggi, a former Charlotte head coach and longtime high school coaching figure, once again inherits the program in crisis mode.

University Confirms Firing

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel issued a firm statement:
“Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Credible evidence confirmed an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This is a clear violation of university policy.”

The university has not released further details and says the investigation is ongoing.
