Remembering a Trailblazing Voice in Journalism

Susan Stamberg, one of the most influential voices in American broadcasting and a founding figure of National Public Radio (NPR), passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 87. A true pioneer, Stamberg made history as the first woman to anchor a national nightly news program in the United States, helping to define NPR’s unique voice and mission.

She joined NPR at its very beginning in 1971, starting with hands-on work—literally cutting tape with a razor blade—before rising to national prominence. From 1972 to 1986, Stamberg served as host of All Things Considered, becoming a trusted companion to millions of listeners and setting the gold standard for thoughtful, human-centered journalism.
