How the Yeckes Triplets Turned Tragedy Into Triumph

A Childhood Marked by Loss

Their story shocked everyone.

  • The triplets lost their mother when they were just three years old.

  • By sixth grade, their father was in prison, leaving them to live with their grandmother, who often left them hungry and kept them out of school until they were eight years old.

  • When their father was released, they moved back in with him. But he would disappear for weeks, leaving the girls alone.

  • Things got worse when their home was caught in a shooting while their father was gone.

The girls were removed from his custody and sent to live with their grandparents. But instead of stability, they faced neglect, periods of homelessness, and a lack of food, clothing, and basic care.

Turning Pain into Power

Despite everything, the Yeckes triplets refused to let their past define their future. With the support of the GEAR UP teachers, they began to heal and grow.

They raised their GPAs above 3.0, enrolled in advanced classes, joined school activities, and held jobs—all while classified as “unaccompanied minors.”

And against the odds, all three proudly walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas.

A Graduation Surprise

But their journey didn’t end there.

The FOX5 Surprise Squad learned about their story of resilience and secretly planned to attend their graduation. As the triplets celebrated their big day, they were pulled aside—only to be given the surprise of their lives in front of the entire school.
