Friends and Family Reflect on Pauline’s Legacy and Battle

In sharing her update, Lesley also reflected on her own experience caring for her mother, who lived to nearly 104 despite facing dementia herself. “In her nineties she was still playing tennis and she was so full of life,” she recalled. “She was an amazing character.” That personal experience, she added, has given her deep empathy for Pauline’s situation and for her loved ones who stand by her.

Pauline’s husband, Steve Sheen, confirmed earlier this year that his wife had retired from her remarkable 50-year acting career following her diagnosis. “Pauline’s health and happiness are our priority,” he said at the time.

Linda Robson, Pauline’s friend since childhood, also shared her heartbreak over her co-star’s condition. “It’s very sad,” she told The Sun. “We’ve been best friends since we were ten. I’ve known [about the diagnosis] for three years and we’ve managed to keep it quiet. She doesn’t know who anybody is. She doesn’t know who I am or who her kids are. Dementia is terrible.”

Despite the sadness, fans and colleagues continue to celebrate Pauline Quirke’s extraordinary contribution to British television. From her unforgettable portrayal of Sharon Theodopolopodous in Birds of a Feather to her powerful dramatic roles, her legacy remains one of warmth, talent, and authenticity — a testament to the woman who made millions laugh and feel.
