The Secret Nickname Prince Philip Had for Meghan Markle

The British royal family has never been short on drama, tradition, or tightly kept secrets — and when Meghan Markle entered the fold, those elements only intensified.
From the very beginning, the world seemed divided over Prince Harry’s choice of partner. Meghan, an American actress, divorcee, and outspoken humanitarian, represented something entirely new for the monarchy. To some, she was a breath of fresh air. To others, she symbolized change they weren’t ready to embrace.

Despite the mixed public opinion, the royal family appeared to welcome her with grace. For a brief moment, it seemed as though Meghan had found her place among the Windsors. But behind palace walls, not everyone was as warm as they appeared in public.

Years after her marriage to Prince Harry, a surprising revelation surfaced — one that shed light on how the late Prince Philip allegedly viewed his grandson’s wife. According to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, the Duke of Edinburgh had a private nickname for Meghan — and it wasn’t exactly complimentary.

Prince Philip reportedly drew comparisons between Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee who married King Edward VIII, causing him to abdicate the throne in 1936. Both women were strong-willed, American, and divorced before joining the royal family — and for Philip, those similarities were too striking to ignore.

In private, Seward revealed, Philip referred to Meghan as “DOW” — short for “Duchess of Windsor.” It was a quiet nod to Wallis Simpson’s title and a hint at his unease about Meghan’s influence within the royal circle.
