Grandma’s Step-by-Step Method

Here’s her foolproof method I’ve followed ever since:

Step 1: Safety First – Unplug the dryer and, if it’s gas-powered, turn off the gas. Pull the machine slightly from the wall.

Step 2: Vacuum the Opening – Remove visible lint with a vacuum hose. You’ll be surprised how much collects even if you clean the lint trap regularly.

Step 3: Flexible Vent Brush – Feed a long, flexible brush into the duct. Twist gently to loosen lint.

Step 4: Vacuum Again – Suck up the loosened dust.

Step 5: Leaf Blower Trick – Outside, remove the vent cover and insert the leaf blower nozzle. A few strong bursts push out hidden dust and lint.

Step 6: Reassemble & Test – Replace the vent cover, reconnect the dryer, and run a short cycle. You’ll notice quieter operation, faster drying, and a cooler machine.

After trying this, I was amazed—the dryer worked like new, clothes dried faster, and the risk of fire felt drastically reduced. Grandma always did this twice a year, and now, so do I.
