Most people face opinions and questions when it comes to having children—but for Lisa White, the pressure was magnified. Born with Down syndrome, Lisa was determined to live life on her own terms. At 29, she had her own apartment, a full-time job at a local Goodwill store, and a loving relationship with a man who also had Down syndrome.

Over 20 years ago, Lisa shocked many when she announced she was pregnant. While the pregnancy drew criticism from outsiders who questioned her ability to parent, her family stood firmly by her side. Lisa approached motherhood with dedication—attending childbirth classes, working with a pregnancy coach, and preparing to give her child the love and care every baby deserves.

When Nic was born, he came into the world a little early and, like his parents, with Down syndrome. His arrival proved that determination, love, and family support can overcome the most daunting expectations.
